In recent years, many people searching for stress management, better sleep quality and overall wellbeing have started showing interest in complementary approaches alongside conventional medicine. Bioenergy balancing, one such approach, has roots going back thousands of years across different cultural traditions, and today it has also become a subject of research in academic circles. In this article we look at the concept of bioenergy, the scientific approach to it in international literature, and its place within complementary health practice.
Where Does the Concept of Bioenergy (Biofield) Come From?
The term biofield emerged at a workshop convened by the Office of Alternative Medicine at the U.S. National Institutes of Health, now known as NCCIH, the National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health, with the aim of defining energy- based practices from different cultures within a shared framework. Out of these discussions, the biofield was defined as a massless field, not necessarily electromagnetic, that surrounds and permeates the body.
Similar concepts have existed under different names across different traditions. Energy concepts known as chi in Traditional Chinese Medicine, prana in Ayurveda, and mana in indigenous Polynesian cultures place the idea of an energy field surrounding and permeating the human body on shared ground across different cultures.
Bioenergy Research in International Literature
Bioenergy and similar practices, such as Reiki, Therapeutic Touch and Qigong, are classified under mind and body practices by NCCIH in the United States. The academic interest in this topic is no accident. The 2012 National Health Interview Survey reported that more than 3.7 million American adults had visited an energy healer at some point in their lives, with more than 1.6 million having visited such a practitioner within the past 12 months. This widespread use has laid the groundwork for the field to be examined through clinical research.
A comprehensive review published by Jain and colleagues in 2015 found that more than 30 clinical studies showed biofield-based practices having positive effects on pain in outpatient settings. These studies play a complementary role particularly in the management of pain, fatigue and anxiety experienced during cancer treatment, and chronic symptoms such as fibromyalgia.
Measurable Physiological Effects
To examine bioenergy practices beyond subjective reports, researchers have turned to measurable biomarkers such as heart rate variability, or HRV. HRV is regarded as a reliable indicator of autonomic nervous system balance, the balance between the body's "fight or flight" and "rest and digest" states. One of the early studies in this area, conducted by Sneed and colleagues in 2001, showed that therapeutic touch produced measurable changes in autonomic nervous system tone, changes that could be detected through spectral analysis of HRV.
More recent reviews present findings in the same direction. A study published in the journal Complementary Therapies in Medicine in 2023 notes that researchers are now using sham-controlled, double-blind, randomized designs, evaluating objective measures such as heart rate variability and cytokine levels alongside patients' subjective reports. This methodological progress is a sign that the field is maturing in terms of scientific rigor.
Scientific Caution Also Matters
An honest assessment of the field requires weighing both promising findings and limitations together. The core challenge the biofield field faces in terms of scientific validation is that this energy field is defined as putative, meaning it has not yet been reliably measured with conventional scientific tools. The general scientific consensus is that evidence for the effectiveness of bioenergy practices remains limited and far from conclusive, and that the benefits observed can largely be explained by the deep relaxation response or the placebo effect. Even so, researchers emphasize that this relaxation response should be regarded as a genuine therapeutic benefit with positive effects on the nervous system.
This scientific caution is exactly why positioning the field as a complementary practice, rather than dismissing it, matters so much. Bioenergy work does not replace conventional medical treatment; it holds value as a supportive practice focused on stress reduction, relaxation and overall wellbeing, one that complements it.
Conclusion: Bioenergy as a Complementary Approach
International literature shows that bioenergy and biofield-based practices are increasingly being examined through more rigorous scientific methods, with their effects on stress, relaxation and quality of life remaining an active area of research. At the same time, it's worth remembering that this field is still developing and has not yet reached conclusive results.
Within this framework, bioenergy balancing sessions should be presented as a complementary practice, one that does not replace medical diagnosis, treatment or conventional healthcare, but that aims to ease the physical and emotional effects of stress, support the relaxation response, and enhance overall wellbeing.
